Seven educators from Rockland County schools attended the Active Learning Specialist Course Summer Institute held at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona, NY July 11 – 13, 2017.
Sponsored by the Rockland County Department of Health, the East Ramapo Central School District’s Teachers Center, Harrisburg University and Fizika Group, the Institute featured opening presentations by Carrie Steindorff, School Health Coordinator at the Rockland County Department of Health and Dr. Nana Koch, Chair, Health, Physical Education and Movement Science, Long Island University.
The course was included in the grant budget for East Ramapo Central District because of Carrie’s positive experience when she took the course in 2014: “The Active Learning Specialist course provides insight into how best to use physical activity in school to help kids learn and move more, as well as bridge the gap between public health and education.”

The Institute was followed by time for them to complete the remaining assignments and upload their active learning plans to the online course.
Following the summer session of the Active Learning Specialist Course, eight teachers have earned their certificate as Active Learning Specialists. Rochelle Kornfeld from Hempstead Elementary completed the course online. Congratulations to all the new Active Learning Specialists!
